Seeds Are Just The Beginning

A seed doesn't look like anything is happening. You put it in the dirt, cover it, water it, and then you wait. For days, sometimes weeks, there's nothing to see. No sprout. No color. Nothing pushing up through the soil. But underground, everything is happening.

The seed is soaking up water. It's softening. A tiny root starts pushing down into the dark before anything ever pushes up toward the light. That root has to happen first. It has to happen before there's any leaf, any stem, any sign of life a person could actually see. The plant is building its foundation in a place no one can see.

If you dig it up because you're impatient, you kill it. If you assume nothing is happening because you can't see it, you're wrong. Something is always happening. It's just underground.

The Kids Are the Soil

If you work with kids or teens, you already know this feeling. You say something true to a teenager. You show up consistently. You correct them, you teach them, you plant something that actually matters. And they look at you like you said absolutely nothing. No reaction. Maybe an eye roll. Maybe a little attitude. Maybe silence. That doesn't mean the seed didn't go in the ground.

I've watched this happen over and over. You keep planting wisdom into a kid who gives you nothing back. Then one day, months or years later, you see it. Maturity starts showing up in how they carry themselves. That's the leaf breaking through the soil.

And then it happens. You hear your own words coming out of their mouth. Not because you told them to say it. Because it actually took root in them and grew into something that's now theirs. That's the flower blooming.

You didn't get to see the root form. You didn't get proof it was working while it mattered most. You just kept planting anyway. That's the job. Not because you always see the harvest, but because the harvest depends on you planting when there's nothing to show for it yet.

The Business Is the Soil Too

The same thing happens in business, and it's just as invisible while it's happening.

Someone makes content. Week after week. Nobody's commenting. Nobody's sharing. No leads, no sales, no sign that any of it is doing a single thing. It would be easy to assume the work is pointless and just give up and stop.

But somewhere, someone has been watching quietly the entire time. Not commenting. Not liking. Just watching. They noticed the consistency. They noticed the quality never dropped, even when nobody seemed to be paying attention. And one day, that person reaches out with an opportunity that changes everything. An opportunity that never would have existed if the content had stopped three months earlier out of frustration.

That's not luck. That's a root that had been growing the whole time, underground, where nobody could see it, including the person doing the planting.

Keep Planting

Here's what both of these situations have in common. The person planting rarely gets to watch the root form. You don't get a progress report while the most important part is happening. You just have to trust that putting something good into the ground matters, even when the ground gives you nothing back.

Most people quit during the part where nothing is visible. That's exactly why most people never see what they planted turn into anything.

You are not responsible for controlling how fast the seed grows, or even whether every single seed takes root. You are only responsible for what you put in the ground and whether you keep showing up to water it.

So keep planting. Not because you can see the roots. Because you can't, and that was never the point.

Most people want the flower without ever agreeing to be patient with the root. They want the harvest without the season where nothing seems to be growing. But nature doesn't skip that season for anyone, and neither does real change in a person or a business.

So my question to you is this. Are you going to keep planting? A garden will only ever be as big as the seeds that were sown.
